Stoic Wisdom: Building Virtue, Resilience and Inner Peace
Macpherson KelShare
There’s a famous Greek maxim, “Know Thyself”. How does one come to know himself, you start by knowing who you’re not (the shadow/mask).
These are the personalities we’ve put up to face the challenges or obstacles of the world.
But to reach your true self, we’re required to let go of all sides of us that isn’t us in our truest and rawest form, not particularly letting go, more of integrating all sides of us to produce our true selves.
Introduction to Stoicism:
Stoicism teaches that we cannot control external events, but we can control our responses. This idea is key to building inner peace. The Stoics focused on virtue—wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance—as the path to tranquility. By living in alignment with these virtues, we can transcend external chaos and cultivate a life of peace.
Applying Stoic Principles:
The Stoics remind us that external events are beyond our control, but our reactions to them are always within our power. We can choose how we respond to challenges, which determines whether we create heaven or hell in our lives.
Practical Tips:
To apply Stoic principles:
Focus on what you can control: your thoughts, actions, and reactions.
Cultivate virtue in all situations, especially when faced with adversity.
Embrace discomfort as an opportunity for growth and transformation.
